A Fairy Good Time

Week 2 of Connect: Gardening

It’s Jael here, and I’m back with another update on Connect: Gardening! For our second session, we made Fairy/Gnome Houses. The kids had so much fun assembling their little structures, and Amy and I had so much fun helping them!

Each child was given their own birdhouse to paint, popsicle sticks to make a fence, little wooden shapes to paint, and of course, dirt, moss, rocks, and other fun things to add to their houses. As the kids arrived, we instructed them to begin painting their birdhouses right away so they had time to dry. Each kid painted their birdhouses so uniquely. Some kids chose bright, fun colours, and some chose to make theirs a bit darker. One child got super creative and painted stars on the roof, and a bird on the back of the house. Once each child was done painting their house, they took a bucket that was already filled with dirt and decorated their yard. Most of the kids painted and built fences out of the popsicle sticks, added moss, rocks, and one child even built a sign for their house. To top it off, each kid was provided with a string of fairy lights to make their houses glow. It was so cool to see how each child put their unique creative touch on each of their houses to fit their personalities.

Throughout the course of the hour, we had lots of fun conversations! We talked about school ending, and what the kids did at school that day. We had some laughs about the obscure names of each paint colour the kids were using, and the kids came up with lots of alternative names for them that they thought would suit the colours better. Amy even joked that we should write the paint company a letter with all the new name suggestions we came up with.

After we were done, each kid had a granola bar for their snack and chatted and played while they waited to get picked up.

I am having so much fun volunteering for this group! Each child is so funny in their own way, and I love getting to know them a bit better each week.
